Minecraft Named Binary Tag Format | Mojang | Game Files |
The NBT ( NBT) file extension is used for the Named Binary Tag format, which was created by Mojang AB for Minecraft as a container of data elements. The NBT format allows multiple different blocks of binary data to be stored together inside a single file. It has several specialized and well-defined subtypes that allow applications to identify and interpret the data in each block, or Named Tag.
The NBT format is a structured file format developed from the GZip compressed data format, with each data item composed of type-length-value (TLV) triplets. Each tag element has an identifier byte and a type field that are followed by the data itself. Types can include byte, short, int, long, float, double, byte array, String, list, compound (i.e. other NBT files nested within the parent NBT file), or Int array.
Similar File Formats
The NBT format is similar to other popular formats such as ZIP, .GZ, .JAR, and .PKG.
Data Usability
Minecraft uses NBT files extensively for storing saved game data and other application data. This includes environment information cubes, player settings, entity information blocks and more. Other applications such as mail publishers also make use of the NBT extension to store associated embedded objects such as images.
Extracting Data from Files
Extracting data from an NBT file requires use of either a dedicated editor or parser program. Some programming languages have their own library built specifically for processing this type of files, including C/C++/Java, JavaScript and Python.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .NBT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .NBT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .NBT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .NBT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .NBT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .NBT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .NBT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .NBT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .NBT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .NBT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
