The .MPLS extension is the file format used by Blu-ray Movie Playlists. This type of file is encoded in the playlist specific Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) and contains playback commands along with their corresponding clip and menu reference frames. It functions as an index for a Blu-ray disc’s content and can be used to play back movies, audio, or video files.
The MPLS is created from the authoring process and contains most of the information needed to play a single title from a Blu-ray disc; this includes the title number, duration, list of chapters, content types, playback type, download control data and more. MPLS files are read by Blu-ray players, as well as other HD DVD/Blu-ray disc players in order to play a disk's files in sequence. Additionally, some video media playback players such as VLC Player are able to read MPLS files. In some cases, unused files are stored within the disk directory that may enhance the player's capabilities.
