The ML file extension is an ASCII text source code file for the ML programming language, which originally stood for Meta-Language. It was developed by Standard ML of New Jersey, or SML/NJ, and is standardised by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is an acronym for Mode, a purely functional programming language with an expressive syntax similar to the syntax of Standard ML. The ML file can be written in any text editor and then compiled using a wide range of compilers.
ML programs are structured such that most of the formatting is done before compilation or execution. This allows for convenient editing and debugging. Programs typically consist of separate entity definitions, values, type annotations, and program text that are linked together to form a complete program. It is syntactically similar to other languages such as Ada, C++, Fortran, Haskell, Scheme and Pascal but has unique features such as objects and modules.
