The MDT ( mdt ) file extension is used by the GeoMedia Access Database Template. This template is a file used to create and store geographic data layers within the GeoMedia Access Database. The MDT file defines all the attributes, values, and layers of a data set, and stores them in an Access Database.
MDT files are similar to other GeoMedia template file types, such as GDD ( gdd) and GDT ( gdt) files. GDD/GDT files are Data Driven Projects created in the GeoMedia Professional software application while MDT files are Data Driven Projects created in the GeoMedia Access software application. MDT files can also be used in Intergraph Geomedia Professional.
Structure of An MDT File
An MDT file contains several individual "chunks" of information including the "general" section which contains settings for the project, a "map title and summary section, the themes associated with the project, the tables found within it, and the links between them. Each of these sections are defined using Microsoft Access-style syntax and databases. MDT files also contain metadata about the project, such as a project name, its author, or its date of creation.
Using an MDT File
MDT files are primarily opened and edited using Intergraph GeoMedia Access. The program allows users to view the information stored in an MDT file, modify it, and export it to another format such as KML ( kml) or GPX ( gpx) for use in other mapping or geographic information system (GIS) programs. Other related file types that work with GeoMedia Access Database Template include MMF ( mmf) files, MDS ( mds) files, MNU ( mnu) files, MXD (

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MDT) with the new application.
