Microsoft Media Center Application Shortcut Format | Microsoft | Settings Files |
The MCL ( .MCL) file extension is used to store links to media in Microsoft Windows Media Center. It is basically a shortcut file used to quickly navigate to media, usually within the Fireplace Viewer application. These files can be opened with Windows Media Center, allowing quick access to particular media files. The MCL format is considered a system and hidden file, meaning users must change their settings to show the file.
The MCL file contains information regarding the media linking together different accounts. As well as sharing information about the media, the MCL also informs Windows Media Center of any associated passwords and locations of downloadable content. It also contains references to accounts, such as .AVI, .MP3, .JPG, and .MP4, which link users through various versions of Windows Media Center.
Similar File Formats
Other Windows Media related files include .ASX, .SMIL, and .WAV.
Creating MCL Files
Microsoft Windows Media Center does not have a direct option for creating MCL files, but they can be easily created within the application using a few lines of code written in Windows Scripting Host. For more complex operations, or applications outside of Media Center, MCL files can be created through various APIs. Additionally, certain applications like Windows Commander and Cygwin are available for creating more sophisticated MCL files.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MCL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MCL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MCL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MCL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MCL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MCL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .MCL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .MCL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .MCL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .MCL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
