Markdown Markup Language Format | John Gruber | Developer Files |
The MARKDOWN file extension is widely used for text-to-HTML conversion documents. These documents are plain text files that can be opened using any text editor such as Notepad or any word processor software, but a specialized Markdown editor such as Typora can also be used to open this type of document.
MARKDOWN files are written using a lightweight markup language and are normally saved with the .md filename extension. It is based on an easy-to-learn syntax that can be used to mark up the text. The language syntax enables formatting of paragraphs and other elements such as headings, lists, links, and code snippets that can be converted into HTML code. Markdown is also supported by other popular formats such as .txt, .pdf, and .docx. Additionally, the MARKDOWN syntax can be used in many web applications, such as Reddit, Stack Overflow, and GitHub.
Markdown File Structure
A MARKDOWN file consists of three major parts: metadata, stylesheet declarations, and the main document body. Metadata includes data about the document itself such as author name, title, and publishing date while the stylesheet declarations are used to apply CSS styles to different parts of the document. The main body of a MARKDOWN file contains paragraphs and various other elements such as headings, lists, links, images, and code samples.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .MARKDOWN) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .MARKDOWN extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .MARKDOWN file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .MARKDOWN extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .MARKDOWN extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .MARKDOWN file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.

It is also good to check
- if the .MARKDOWN file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
