The MAE ( .mae) file extension is an electronic document which includes three-dimensional molecular data used for viewing, modifying and analyzing molecular models in various Molecular Modeling Software programs. It is generated by programs such as Amber, Aquarium, Genedock, Maestro and Sybyl. The MAE file stores information about a protein structure, along with parameters such as the position of individual atoms, bonds between atoms, molecular geometry and other features.
Technical Details
The MAE file format structure corresponds to the SMILES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) standard, which describes chemistry set notation formats and rules. It holds all information about a molecule, such as the type of molecule, its geometry, charges, energies and atomic scattering factors for crystallographic applications. The structure of MAE files is similar to other molecular data interchange formats like MDL Molfiles (.mol), MJ2 Chemical Markup Language (.cml) and DeCYInterchange File Format (.dcy).
