The LYC file extension is associated with the Adobe Photoshop® software suite and is a compressed bitmap or vector layer design image file. It is used to store a single layer which is part of a Photoshop project and can be compressed to reduce the size of the file. The LYC format can also store layer filters, such as drop shadows or adjustment effects, in addition to the layer design graphics.
The LYC format is similar to other Adobe Photoshop® layers formats such as the LYR, PSD, and PSB. It includes a small header containing information about the actual image or layout contained in the file, but lacks any additional Adobe Photoshop® metadata such as layers information or effects settings that are stored in other associated Adobe Photoshop® layers formats.
Usage
The LYC format is useful for transmitting graphic images or design elements over a low bandwidth connection or for archiving projects with smaller file sizes due to compression. The LYC files can also be re-imported into Photoshop in order to extract the layer data. This makes it easier to collaborate between two or more users who are working on the same project and need to exchange design elements. Additionally, it can be used by people who need to create complex design elements but avoid increasing file sizes.
Compatibility
The LYC format can be opened and edited with most modern image editing software including Adobe® Photoshop®, Adobe® Photoshop® Elements, GIMP, Promob Studio, etc.. But the files will not open directly in any text editor. It also will not open in earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop® like CS4 and CS5.
