LESS Style Sheet Format | Alexis Sellier | Web Files |
The LESS file extension is an acronym for Leaner Style Sheets. It is a dynamic style sheet language developed by Alexis Sellier and Dmitry Fadeyev for use with Node.js and WebKit. LESS is an open source language that is designed to make the process of writing style sheets simpler and easier compared to the more traditional Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Advantages of LESS
LESS makes use of real-time compiling functions to provide users with the most up-to-date CSS information, as well as providing advantages from the elasticity of the language. With LESS, users can create variables, mixins, operations, and nesting definitions more easily than in conventional style sheets. Furthermore, due to its server-side deployment, LESS works in a wide range of web development languages; not only supplying styling support for HTML, but also providing access through other programs such as JavaScript or PHP. Other similar file extensions are: SASS, SCSS and Stylus.
Using LESS
LESS documents consist of two layers. The first layer defines the parameters with which users can work; variables and mixins; these define the elements of a style sheet that will be used throughout the document. Then, when users are ready to design a website, they use the second layer to configure the design parameters based on the already defined elements. This second layer simplifies the process of writing a style sheet for a website while still giving users ample control over the attributes they wish to define.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .LESS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .LESS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .LESS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .LESS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .LESS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .LESS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .LESS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .LESS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .LESS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .LESS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
