Encrypted Passwords Database Format | KeePass Password Safe | Database Files |
KDB (Keypass Database File) KDB is an encrypted database file format introduced by KeePass and used to store credentials, passwords, and other confidential information. It is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES algorithm), or ChaCha20. It consists of the file header, the key database, and the protected key. The header contains user credentials for accessing the database. The keydatabase stores encrypted data including usernames, passwords, notes, URLs, and attached files. The protected key is a combination of a hash and a master password which functions as the key to decrypt the KDB file.
The KDB format can be easily opened using KeePass, or any compatible third-part password manager software such as Kirbi, iSpyPen, or MyPadlock. Users can copy data from other applications into KeePass and save it in a KDB file. It is also possible to export KDB files into other formats such as CSV, XML, HTML, and XSL. This allows users more flexibility if they need to create a back up of their passwords or transfer them to another device.
Comparisons to Other Database File Formats
The main difference between KDB files and other database file formats such as SQLITE, JSON, or CSV, is that it is completely encrypted. This means that only users who have the correct master password can access the data stored in the KDB file. Other database formats are either partially encrypted or not encrypted at all. This makes KDB files more secure than other file formats.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .KDB) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .KDB extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .KDB file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .KDB extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .KDB extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .KDB file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .KDB file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .KDB file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .KDB file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .KDB file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
