The IPF file extension is an archive file format exclusively used by SMS Installer Script. A program written in Sierra's Advanced Format. It allows for installation of programs without the need to write code. IPF files contain resources such as electronic data interchange data, installable packages, text and script files, fonts and graphics.
Uses
The IPF file format is used to package applications for install on any operating system compatible with SMS Installer Script. This includes Windows, Linux and DOS-based machines. Several other similar formats are either related or derived from the IPF format, such as WISE, SIS, and CPT. These all share the same archiving capabilities as IPF but also include data compression and encryption.
Working with IPF Files
To create or update an IPF file you will require specific software such as the Install Shield Office Installer Wizard, the Centura Install Anyware Toolkit or the Setup.exe Generator Tool. To open files with only viewing permissions you can do so using the Smart Installation System SDK, which has been designed specifically for this purpose. Additionally, tools such as WinRAR and WinZip can be used to extract the contents of an IPF file. These allow you to access read-only files such as images and scripts that make up the archive.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .IPF) with the new application.
