The IFP (GTA Animation File) file extension is used by Grand Theft Auto 3D video game series for animation data files. Animation data within the IFP file is stored in a .BIN format which can be manipulated with various tools. The IFP file type is commonly used for storing mission briefings, character dialogue, cinematic shots and many more animations. IFP file format is a proprietary image format created by Rockstar Games for Grand Theft Auto, and was first discovered in the game's Actors.img container.
Compatibility
The IFP file extension is mainly found on computers running Microsoft Windows. Although the IFP file utilized in Grand Theft Auto is specific to this game series, similar ones are used in some other games such as Sony’s EverQuest or LucasArts’ Star Wars Battlefront 2. Other types of animation files include .IFP, .IDV, and .IDX.
Opening an IFP File
Since the IFP file extension is proprietary and unique to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto game series, it cannot be opened directly with general-purpose programs, like Notepad or Microsoft WordPad. It can only be viewed and edited with specialized software called the IMG Tool. This tool is available for download via certain modding websites that specialize in creating custom content for the Grand Theft Auto game series. Other programs capable of opening and editing IFP image files include Microsoft Visual Studio, CodeWeavers Crossover, VideoLAN VLC media player, and the UnReal Development Kit (UDK).
