The IDLK .IDLK file extension is associated with Adobe InDesign and used to store the InDesign document lock state. IDLK files are automatically updated each time a document is saved. This allows InDesign to keep an active connection between the application and the document it is currently operating on. An InDesign document can only be edited by the user that holds the IDLK when the document is opened. When multiple users attempt to open a single InDesign document at the same time, InDesign creates any files ending with.EXT.000 where EXT is the remaining part of file’s name.
Technical Details on IDLK
The IDLK file type stores a copy of the InDesign page description in its special InDesign binary file format. It consists of the ASCII identifier of the client application which holds the lock together with other information like application version and capabilities, lock number, operation status etc. The human-readable version of data stored in the IDLK appears as “InDesign Client Version” followed by the application number and then details such as "Editor's User Name", "Hostname", etc. Similar file extensions include IDLE, INDD, INDT, INDB and INDX.
