ICalendar Calendar File Format (Microsoft Outlook, Apple ICal) | N/A | Misc Files |
The ICS or iCalendar File file extension is a standard format used by several different software applications to share calendar and event information both within a single computer and over the Internet. It is developed and maintained by the Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium, an open industry initiative requiring that all implementations of the specification meet certain interoperability standards. This format supports many features including multiple time zones, To Do lists and advance scheduling including Support for Recurring Events.
Format Details
The ICS file format consists of lines of text encoded in the US-ASCII character set. It is formatted as plain text with each line followed by either a carriage return or line feed. The lines are grouped into sections according to their subject matter. This allows the information to be parsed efficiently by the interpreter. There are two major versions of this format, Version 2.0 which is the baseline and Version 2.1 which includes additional features such as support for multiple alarms.
Similar File Extensions
ICS files are often confused with VCF, VCS, and CAL files, however those three formats are typically used to store contact information or reminders rather than calendar events. All of these differ from the ICS format, popularized by the Apple iCal, Mozilla Sunbird, and other calendar software applications.

Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ICS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ICS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ICS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ICS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ICS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ICS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ICS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ICS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ICS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ICS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
