File extension .HSH
|Windows Catalog Search Index Format||Microsoft||System Files|
The HSH file extension stands for “Windows Catalog Search Index File.” It is a data file used in Microsoft Windows, in particular in the search indexing feature. The HSH files stores data in an encrypted format that is read by Microsoft Windows while indexing, to better improve the speed of user search queries. Furthermore, they are stored in a safe location to prevent users from directly manipulating the data contained in the file.
Technical Details:An HSH file is usually composed of two distinct parts; the first being the data itself, and the second being headers that state where and in what location this data resides on disk. Generally, it will consist of various strings associated with different files, and it also includes a list of languages, sites, and other related information. In terms of size, it can range from 0KB to several hundred megabytes, depending on the amount of information associated with a particular file. It is important to note that despite its size limitation, an HSH index file does contain a great deal of important system data.
Typically associated with indexed files for faster searching purposes, HSH files are commonly found alongside other types of index files such as CAT,.IDX, and.PDB. Similarly to those files it is not recommended to open or edit these files manually as doing so may lead to data corruption or loss.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .HSH) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .HSH extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .HSH file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .HSH extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .HSH extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .HSH file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .HSH file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .HSH file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .HSH file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .HSH file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
