Windows Digital Right Management Format | Microsoft | Data Files |
The HDS (High-Density Storage) .DAT file extension is associated with the Microsoft PlayReady Data File. This file type is used by the Microsoft PlayReady software to store and manage critical content information, such as license keys, encrypted video, and audio files. It operates on the basic premise that all renditions of protected content have unique associated license requirements.
HDS files typically store a special set of data consisting of one or more individual chunks of content and encrypted data relating to license keys. Content can be encrypted using Common Encryption (CENC), AES-CTR, or specific DRM systems. The license key is authenticated using Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems like Microsoft PlayReady. The HDS Data File contains encrypted video files with specific DRM policies for playback and usage that will be enforced by software applications such as Microsoft Windows Media Player.
Usage and Similar Formats
HDS Data Files are usually found on computers associated with Microsoft Windows media players, particularly streaming media tablets and devices supporting the Microsoft PlayReady package. Its format is also supported by other media players, such as VLC Media Player for iOS and Android devices. For purposes of comparison, other DRM implementations associated with similar file extensions include .WVX, .WMX, and .ASX, although HDS files provide higher levels of protection.
Security Features
HDS files are highly secure and rely on advanced encryption algorithms to ensure that only authorized users can open them. Additionally, the encryption makes it very hard to copy or pirate the content that is contained in them. The contents can include licenses, tokens, authentication proofs, authentication keys, and other important licensed materials. Microsoft licenses two versions of HDS: the “Standard” version and the “Extended” version which provides extra features. In order to view content from an HDS file, it must be digitally signed by Microsoft’s PlayReady servers.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .HDS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .HDS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .HDS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .HDS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .HDS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .HDS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .HDS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .HDS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .HDS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .HDS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
