GRASS GIS Workspace Layout Definition | GRASS Development Team | Settings Files |
The GXW file extension stands for GRASS GIS Workspace. It is a format defined by GRASS GIS, a free and open source Geographic Information System (GIS) developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Research and Development Center (ERDC). This type of file contains layout data often used for creating maps. It stores data related to vector layers, raster layers, metadata, authentication settings, and query parameters.
Layout Data
The GXW file stores layout data - this includes the spatial and projection parameters of the map, the location of the map objects such as symbols, lines, points, polygons, text labels as well as various other map elements. The coordinates used by the file are usually stored in longitude/latitude pairs or in UTM coordinates, however this is dependent on the options specified by the user. Additionally it stores information about labeling characteristics such as font type, font size, line widths as well as contents of various text labels.
Relationship with Other Formats
The GXW file can also be used to store its associated raster layers. These raster layers are stored in their own instances called .GRD, which are saved separately from the main workspace layout file. This format can also be used to import and export several other vector formats such as .GML, .SHP, .KML, .GPX, and .CSV files. Furthermore it can also be used to read and save a wide variety of other types of data including imagery such as .JPG, .PNG, elevation data such as .DEM, as well as other raster types such as .FST, .HDF, and more.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .GXW) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .GXW extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .GXW file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .GXW extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .GXW extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .GXW file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .GXW file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .GXW file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .GXW file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .GXW file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
