The GWI ( .GWI) file extension is associated with the GroupWise Database Shortcut File. It contains shortcuts and attachments from the GroupWise database that was created using Novell's GroupWisemail client. The data stored in a GWI file includes the source GW database address, document type, size, status, and priority number. It also may contain attachments from other applications such as MS Word and Excel.
The GWI file is created when one user sends email from the GroupWise client to another user. It is designed to save the sender's id, recipient's id, timestamp, subject line, text content, and attached files in-between the two mailboxes. Once the mail recipient downloads the GWI file and opens it from within their GroupWise environment, all contents stored within the file are automatically transferred to the recipient's mailbox which enables them to access emails anytime.
Uses and Similar File Extensions
GWI files are primarily used by users of Novell's GroupWise mail client to send emails and attachments to other users. It provides a secure way of transferring emails and other documents within the same organization or between multiple organizations because only users who have access to GroupWise mailboxes can unhide and extract information from the GWI file. Other similar file extensions also used in GroupWise client are .GWS, GWE, .GWV, GWD and .MPA.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .GWI) with the new application.
