The GEDCOM file extension (Genealogical Data Communication) is a standard file format for genealogy data developed by the non-profit Family History Information Standards Organisation (FHISO). It defines a set of specifications for exchanging genealogical and historical information between different software applications. The latest version of GEDCOM is 6.0, released in 2005.
Using GEDCOM files enables genealogists to store entire family trees in a single file, making it easy to save and share their work with others. The data is organised in hierarchical structures in this type of file, making it simple to store birth and death dates for individuals, as well as any other important information such as census results, address details, and even pictures or source documents associated with these individuals. It is easily exportable from many different types of genealogy software, including popular programs like Family Tree Maker, GenoPro, and Reunion.
