A GANTTPROJECT .gan file is a project file used by GanttProject, the free desktop project management application. The project data within a file is stored in human readable text form, making it easy to open and edit using any text editor. Although the file format does not contain binary data nor (to my knowledge) encrypted sections, it is not recommended to open and edit a GANTTPROJECT file while GanttProject or any other applications are concurrently accessing the file.
This type of file stores project elements such as tasks, people assignments, links and resources. Data can be displayed in different formats, for example in a Gantt chart or as a WBS (Work Breakdown Structure). Additional project information such as notes or documents can also be written into the file for easy access. As this type of file stores its data in plain text form, generated process images can also be stored along with basic resource management but with only limited support since some advanced features require commercial GanttProject editions.
