OpenDocument Flat XML Spreadsheet Format | Oracle | Spreadsheet Files |
FODS (File Open Document Spreadsheet) is a specialized version of the Open Document Format for spreadsheets, developed by the OpenOffice.org project. It's an open standard for data exchanges, and is becoming increasingly popular as a file format for exchanging electronic spreadsheets across different software applications, operating systems and hardware platforms. It is a flat XML-based file format for storing spreadsheets and other tabular data in a single XML document consisting of Sheet, Table, Formulas, Ranges, and Data Parts.
Similar to other open document format (ODF) based file types such as .ODS, .ODB, .ODI, and .OTP, the FODS file format allows for easy integration with programs such as Microsoft Excel, Apache OpenOffice Calc, Google Sheets, IBM Lotus Symphony etc. This particular file type can be exported as other spreadsheet file formats like CSV (Comma Separated Values), XLS (MS Excel 97-2003 Workbook) and XLSX (MS Excel Workbook).
Advantages of FODS File Format
The FODS files offer some advantages over traditional spreadsheet formats like XLS and XLSX, some of which include:
- High suite of functionality, allowing users to implement sophisticated formulas.
- Built-in encryption, which helps protect data.
- No compatibility issues with different versions or software programs.
- Allows for easily exchange of data between multiple software applications.
- Flexible file format that can be converted into other formats like HTML.
Disadvantages of FODS File Format
The FODS file format has some drawbacks in comparison with XLS and XLSX files, including:
- Not widely supported by all spreadsheet applications so incompatibilities may arise.
- Requires more processing power to encode/decode when compared to traditional flat formats like CSV.
- Can have difficulty displaying large sets of data due to its XML-based nature.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .FODS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .FODS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .FODS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .FODS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .FODS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .FODS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .FODS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .FODS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .FODS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .FODS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
