The FMW file extension is used by FME, a Safe Software Inc. data transformation and integration platform. FME is a suite of tools that allow users to create complex data pipelines to integrate, compare, and analyze data across different sources and formats. The FMW file format is the default workbench file created by FME, which consists of transformation and valve scripts written in FME’s proprietary Workbench language. It's not possible to open or view the contents of an FMW file as text without an FME project, however, it can be used to store small snippets of code.

The .FMX is a compressed version of an FMW file but with fewer annotations and details; these files are typically used when transforming large amounts of data at once. While the .FMD file stores information about features being read from a particular datasource. The FMQ contains all messages produced by transformers during execution. Finally, the .FWS files are plain text files that contain information about workspaces.
