FASTA DNA Data Format | N/A | Data Files |
The FA file extension is associated with the FASTA (FASTA Formatted Sequence File) file format. Files in this format are used to store gene sequences, amino acid sequences, and other biological data related to molecular biology or genetics. Biologists most commonly use these files when performing sequence alignment and analysis.
The FA files are stored as plain text, and contain the header line and sequence elements of a nucleotide sequence. The header record contains various elements such as an identification name for the molecule, species, protein class, etc., followed by the sequence itself. The second element is the sequence that is encoded using the IUB/IUPAC amino acid and nucleic acid codes which can be either upper- or lower-case letters.
Programs That Open FA Files
The most widely used program to open/edit FA files is the BioEdit software package. Other programs that may be used to view or edit these files include ApE (A Plasmid Editor), DNASIS, GeneMark, Multiple EM for Motif Elicitation (MEME), EditSeq, and SeqVerter.
In addition to FA, there are other related formats that are used for storing biological sequence data, such as FAS, FNA, FRN, SEQ, SSA, and ALN. All of these formats have similar structure and sequencing but vary by version and parameters of the sequence data they are designed to contain.
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .FA) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .FA extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .FA file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .FA extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .FA extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .FA file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .FA file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .FA file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .FA file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .FA file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
