The ERB file extension is associated with Ruby. ERB is an acronym for Embedded Ruby, an interpreted template system that embeds Ruby code into HTML. This allows web designers to build dynamic websites using static HTML without the need for a fullblown web server side scripting language. ERB enables website developers to combine HTML and Ruby code seamlessly, resulting in web pages that are more powerful and offer more flexibility than those created with plain HTML. The code in ERB files is parseable by the Ruby programming language interpreter which is part of the standard Ruby distribution.
Usage
The main purpose of ERB files is to allow the development of dynamic websites using static HTML. To use an ERB script, the Ruby interpreter needs to be installed on the web server; once this is done, the interpreter reads the ERB file, combines the Ruby code and text content into one page, and renders this page when a request is sent to it from a client. An ERB file has to be given two types of instructions – those for rendering the page in HTML and those for executing Ruby code within it. ERB files can be used with web servers such as Apache, Lighttpd and nginx, as well as on standalone applications such as Sinatra and Rails. They can also be used in conjunction with other file formats such as XML and YAML to enable more complex websites.

Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ERB) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ERB extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ERB file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ERB extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ERB extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ERB file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ERB file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ERB file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ERB file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ERB file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
