ECM Disc Image | Neill Corlett | Disk Image Files |
The *.ecm file format is a compressed disc image used with various disc emulation programs. It is often used as an alternative to the *.iso format, as it can compress files and folder structures in order to reduce the overall storage size of the image. This makes it useful when needing to transport data between computers or to store data backups. ECM files also feature error checking in order to detect if any corruption of the data has occurred, giving users the assurance that their data is safe and secure.
Compression Format
ECM files are compressed using a lossless format known as ECM Extend Compress Marker, which is capable of compressing any type of digital data regardless of file type or contents. Encoding is done in blocks, and the program uses methodologies similar to modern compression algorithms such as ZIP for various techniques such as marking byte sequences, removing redundancies, and optimizing boundary matches.
Uses
By compressing disc images with ECM files, users are able to save up to 80% on space when compared with traditional .iso disc image formats. In addition, ECM files can be used as an alternative file repository for various software titles such as CloneCD, DiscJuggler, and Alcohol 120%, allowing users to securely backup DVD/CD media while drastically reducing the space taken up by those backups. Other similar file extensions include mds/.mdf, bin/.cue, and .nrg.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ECM) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ECM extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ECM file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ECM extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ECM extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ECM file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ECM file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ECM file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ECM file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ECM file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
