The DS C (Nikon Disk Identification File) file extension is a text file generated by Nikon. This file is created to record camera specific information, including a unique serial number, lens type, firmware version and other camera details. The contents of the DS C file allow a user to verify basic information about the camera used in creating a photograph.
DS C files are associated with a specific Nikon camera and should not be mistaken as other image files. They contain only text and no image is associated with them. DS C files do not contain the original image and can usually be opened using any a regular text reader. The information contained within DS C files cannot be modified as it is considered camera identification tags.
Opening DS C
DS C files can be opened in any text readers such as Notepad++, Atom, or TextEdit. Other similar file extensions include .DCO, .NDF, and .DNG, just to name a few.
Limitations of DS C
While the DS D, file can be used to refer back to a specific camera used to capture an image, it should not be confused with an image file and should not be considered interchangeable. A photographer should always retain the original image in the associated native file format for future reference.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DSC) with the new application.
