The DISKDEFINES (Linux LiveCD Information File) is a text-based information file used by GNU/Linux – and in particular, LiveCD distributions – to store various information about the LiveCD and its image. It commonly consists of name, version, and other information concerning the source and destination of the LiveCD image. Additionally, it may include instructions on how to update files, patch any necessary changes, or otherwise configure one’s system to be able to run the disk.
Usability & Functionality
As the DISKDEFINES file is a text-based information file, it does not contain any data that can be interpretted or executed by a computer. Instead, it serves a purely descriptive purpose, telling GRUB or another boot manager what kind of CD image is being loaded, from where it is coming, and possibly – the destination and size of any associated files. This information allows GRUB to properly load the specified disk image during the startup process.
The DISKDEFINES file extension is related to similar extensions such as grub, .cfg, .conf, and .mnu, all of which serve the same purpose for various other operating systems and distributions.
