Google Android Compiled Executable Format | Developer Files |
The DEX file extension is a compiled code and executable file associated with Google's Android operating system. It stores a compiled version of application code written using Java programming language. The DEX format allows files to be optimized for use on mobile devices running the Android platform, making it a popular file format for developers.
What is DEX File Format?
The purpose of the DEX format is to store information related to classes, objects, and data contained in the application built for Android that was developed with Java programming. This file is created using the compile-time tool called dx or Dalvik Executable, allowing the compilation of the.class files generated from the.java source code into.dex (Dalvik Executable) files. By generating these files, the processes are able to save space as multiple classes are stored in each DEX file.
How is DEX Opened?
Each.dex file can only be opened by an appropriate device running an Android operating system. Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X systems cannot read this type of file. To decompile a DEX file requires a program such as APKTool, which is used for reverse engineering Android applications. Similiarly, other options include JADX, JD-GUI, and DEY Optimizer. Additionally, DEX files can be converted to the JAR format using programs such as Dex2Jar.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DEX) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DEX extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DEX file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DEX extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DEX extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DEX file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DEX file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DEX file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DEX file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DEX file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
