Delphi Compiled Unit Format | Embarcadero Technologies | Developer Files |
The DCU file extension is a Delphi Compiled Unit, containing the compiled code for an Object Pascal unit applicable to applications created with Embarcadero Delphi. It contains source code which is complied with the Delphi Pascal compiler and linked as a flattened portable executable. DCU files are placed in special packages, containing the main programs and their associated compiled DCU units.
DCU files contain object-oriented class and routine definitions, along with binary code that has been optimized by the compiler. They can be produced from the related source (.DPR) project file or any of the Pascal files associated with the project (.PAS,.DPK). In addition, a DCU file stores data about identifiers, including procedure and function names, properties, variables and constants that have been declared. Other related DCU file extensions include: .DCB, .ORG, and .OPT, which store related data relevant to a program's build order, search paths and compiler settings.
Link with Executables
When using Delphi IDE to create an application, DCU files are used as resources for establishing links between an executable (.EXE) program generated by the Pascal compiler and external Object Pascal units. As a result, users can create executable files that include links with all those Delphi compiled units (.DCP) needed to complete the application.
Usage & Dependencies
DCU files are exclusively used for applications produced in programming language such as Object Pascal. In general usage, they form a dependency link with other programs involved in their production and are only opened by the Delphi IDE. Those DCU files derived from a source code must accompany the original file for the program to properly compile and execute.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DCU) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DCU extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DCU file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DCU extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DCU extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DCU file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DCU file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DCU file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DCU file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DCU file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
