The D64 (Commodore 64 Disk Image) file extension is a diskette dump format of the Commodore 64 computer. It is primarily used to archive and transfer C64 floppy images over the internet, and is the de facto standard of backing up C64 software.
D64 files represent exact backups of Commodore 64 diskette images. The file format consists of an underlying Sector Image File (SIF) and an associated file header, which contains information about the diskette's geometry, distribution of files, and other types of information. Specifically, the header includes: the name of each file stored on the diskette; where each file begins and ends; details about the chunks of data and where errors that occurred when creating the image, referred to by the C64 community as GCR (Galois-counter Carry) sectors. (Similar file extensions: D71, D81, DHD, DNP)
Creating D64 File Images
)Creating D64 image files requires knowledge about sector organization for the specified device, usually either a FDC-drive or a floppy disc. There are several dedicated programs (such as CopyWriter, FlexCopy or StarCommander) that can be used to create images, or you can use a physical drive mounted on development hardware like the 1541 Ultimate II.
Opening & Viewing D64 Files
Since it's in binary format, D64 files must be opened with software such as VICE, CBM.prg Studio, Blockhead, TheC64, DiskTransfer,or one of many other C64 programs.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .D64) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .D64 extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .D64 file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .D64 extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .D64 extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .D64 file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .D64 file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .D64 file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .D64 file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .D64 file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
