A CZI (Carl Zeiss Image Data File) is a digital imaging file format developed by Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH for storing microscopy images. It is the proprietary format used by Zen, the microscope imaging software produced by Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH. CZI files store microscope images in a natively compressed and multi-dimensional image file, and may also store accompanying metadata related to the image such as objective or microscope related data, patient data or various annotations. It supports .czi, .gen, and .zvi file extension.
Technical Specifications
CZI files use the ZIP file format to compress the image data and the XML language to represent the accompanying annotation, metadata and thumbnails stored within these files. Generally speaking, the CZI format requires high resolutions as well as various color spaces, chanales and depths to fit its purpose. Within a CZI file, multiple resolutions of a single image are stored along with other elements such as metadata description, black/white reference fiducial features etc. Its native resolution support includes 4K/8K x 4K/8K images with up to 65000 gray levels (16 bit) snapshots captured at both visible and non-visible wavelengths.
Similar File Extensions
The CZI format is closely related to similar file extensions such as .lif, .pic, .lsm, and .tif.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CZI) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CZI extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CZI file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CZI extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CZI extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CZI file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CZI file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CZI file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CZI file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CZI file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
