Dr. Halo Bitmap Format | N/A | Raster Image Files |
The CUT file extension is an image format associated with Dr. Halo image editor developed by the company Metacreations. It was most commonly used on the MS-DOS and UNIX systems to store digital images. The CUT format was created for Metacreations by the artist Kevan J. Gareau and released in 1993. It has a lossless compression ratio of up to 3 to 1.
The CUT image format features support for 24-bit images, as well as 8-bit paletted images. It allows the user to save their work with greater granularity; no information about the image is lost when the file is saved. A few other formats, including GIF, PCX, TIFF, PSD, BMP, TGA, PCT, and XBM, share similar capabilities.
File Storage and Preservation
The CUT file extension supports lossless compression. This means that the entire image is stored within it, along with information about colour depth and palette data. This ensures that the file can be accessed at a later date and that no information is ever lost when opening or saving a CUT image file. The format also supports some rudimentary form of protection from accidental modification of the underlying piece of art.
Functionality
The CUT image format supports three basic modes of operation: display mode, animate mode, and mask mode. Display mode enables users to view individual images in the native resolution. Animate mode allows 'morphing' of two images into one another while masks can be layered over an array of images enabling complicated effects such as fades between multiple images. These features give Dr. Halo an advantage over other competing image editors such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel PaintShop Pro that do not provide these capabilities.
Compatibility and Common Usage
The CUT format has been widely adopted by artists since its release in 1993 and is still in use today in spite of competition from more advanced formats such as JPEG, PNG, and BMP. However, due to its proprietary nature, other applications may not be able to read or write this type of file directly without additional software or plugins; instead, users must export their work as a different file format for compatibility purposes. Despite this limitation, the CUT file extension remains popular among those working in the digital arts field due to its powerful features.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CUT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CUT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CUT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CUT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CUT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CUT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CUT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CUT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CUT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CUT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
