Certificate Revocation List | N/A | Web Files |
The CRL file is a digital certificate used for secure file and network communication through secure sockets layer (SSL). It stands for Certificate Revocation List and consists of records of digital certificates that are issued by the certification authority and revoked or expired and thus non-trusted for use. The primary purpose for the CRL is to prevent a malicious entity from being able to reuse an old, possibly revoked certificate for private communications or other security operations. It is an important part of certain protocols such as S/MIME in order to keep the data secure.
Technical Details
A CRL file contains a list of digital certificates stored and can be in several different formats such as DSA, RSA, or ECC. It is typically signed with digital signature algorithms from OpenSSL or X.509. The details of the certificates listed along with byte-by-byte coverage of all critical parts of the list will be found in the CRL file. Recent versions of these documents also feature notice periods, timestamping details, and certificate serial numbers which identify the parenthood and origin of each listed document. Similar file extensions include CRT, CER, & DER.
Reason For its Use
The functions of the CRL file work to assist the end user in managing digital certificates as it holds records that denote certificates status. Revoked items can be communicated instantly through access to the CRL source, updating the filing system with new information. Each time a connection attempt is made to verify data, this file is accessed on both sides to provide up-to-date details needed to complete any encrypted digital communication securely. Without the CRL’s presence, the accessing computer would not know whether a certificate had expired or been revoked until after a connection was made and data transmitted.
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CRL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CRL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CRL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CRL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CRL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CRL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CRL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CRL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CRL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CRL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
