BIT is a .BIT file extension used by Xilinx Design Software running on Windows, Linux and macOS. It is also known as a BIT File or Bitstream Data File and contains key configuration information, such as FPGA/CPLD design data. BIT files are created when a user compiles their Verilog or VHDL design source code into a bitstream and is usually stored within the project folder for later uploading to their development board through a programmer. It is designed to facilitate partial reconfiguration of FPGAs and CPLD devices, allowing the user to quickly adapt their design without going through the full compilation process.
Similar file extensions include .RBF, .HEX, .BIN, .NFF, .SOF, and .JAM.
Bitstream Format Overview
The bitstream file format, which is composed of several concatenated bitslices containing configuration information, initiates the configuration process for some FPGAs/CPFDs manufactured by Xilinx. These bitslices contain both control information (configuration enable information) and data information (configuration data stored in shift registers) used to configure the FPGA or CPLD.
Compatibility with Xilinx Design Software
BIT files are used in conjunction with Xilinx Design Software, including Integrated Design Environment (ISE), Vivado Design Suite, ISim Simulator, ChipScope Pro Analyzer, PlanAhead/Global Planner tools, SmartModels Creator, System Generator for DSP, DSP Builder Express blockset, EDK (Embedded Development Kit), EDK System Generator blockset, Core Generator tools, HDL Designer Series tools and many more. In order to open a BIT file, the user must first download and install one of these suites.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .BIT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .BIT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .BIT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .BIT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .BIT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .BIT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .BIT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .BIT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .BIT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .BIT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
