The .BED file extension is a basic annotations track file, and is primarily associated with UCSC Genome Browser, which is considered to be a world-class research tool for viewing and analyzing genomic data from model organisms. This file type is usually created when saving any type of annotation track as a separate file, such as Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) scores, Microarrays, or Gene Expression data. The BED format includes user display settings such as the menu and track labels, visibility, description of the data series, as well as the track attributes that store the data values.
The BED file format was designed to enable rapid loading and display of genomic data on the UCSC Genome Browser website.
