The ASD file extension is related to a backup file that is created automatically by a Microsoft Word in the event of a power outage or system crash. It is designed to prevent users from losing data due to unexpected interruptions. It stores a copy of the document which was last saved, prior to the interruption. ASD stands for AutoSave Document and is backed up with a .WBK file.
File Structure
ASD files are standard XML documents and have a.asd extension. They are composed of three parts – Header Information, Save Information and Document Information. The Header Information contains the title, subject and other metadata related to the saved file. Save Information stores a copy of the open document as it was at the time of the autosave event, and Document Information contains information about formatting such as margins and font sizes, as well as any inline comments in the document.

Other file extensions that are associated with Word documents include .DOCX, .DOCM, .DOTX, and .DOTM. ASD files are generally smaller in size than these other Word document extensions.
