ArcView ARC/INFO Coverage Data Format | ESRI | GIS Files |
ADF is the .ADF file extension associated with ESRI ArcView ARC/INFO coverage data files. Although not as commonly used as other file types, ArcView ARC/INFO coverage data files are used to store various spatial data for ArcView. ADF files are two-dimensional vector layer files and they contain spatial data representing points, lines, pixels and polygons with the ability to create attribute tables, layouts, and map documents. These files are used primarily in GIS mapping or terrestrial modelling applications. ADF also supports digital raster image coordinates and values which are incorporated into shapefiles and other GIS formats such as .E00. This ensures that a wide variety of vector-data information can be made available for different projects.
File Contents
The contents of an ADF file vary depending on the usage of it in the particular software environment is is being used in. Generally however an ADF file contains shape-based spatial data including polylines, points, polygons and/or coverages. ADF files may also contain size information which indicates the size and resolution of each element stored inside, as well as any associated attribute data such as labels, tags or identifiers. Additionally, raster images, including bitmap and tiff graphics may be stored inside an ADF file.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ADF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ADF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ADF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ADF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ADF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ADF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ADF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ADF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ADF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ADF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
