The .ACSM file extension is an Adobe Content Server Message file used by Adobe Digital Editions. It is used to register and authorize electronic books for readers. The book owner can request such a backup file from the Adobe server, save the file on their computer, and use it to authorize their computer in order to view the copyrighted content. An ACSM file is linked with a license that grants permission to access the content.

An ACSM file is a small plain-text XML file which contains an encrypted token that stores information about the user's device and the purchased content.
