Adobe Photoshop Color Palette And Swatches Format | Adobe Systems | Settings Files |
The ACO file extension stands for Adobe Photoshop Color Swatch File. It is a proprietary format created by Adobe which contains color swatches for use in other creative applications such as the Adobe Creative Suite family and their corresponding editor programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign. ACO files save both individual colors and collections of colors. These collections can contain multiple color sets, like CMYK, RGB, or Pantone values. This file type is perfect for graphic designers who need a quick and easy way to save their color swatches and apply them across multiple projects as needed.
Technical Details
The ACO file type is saved in plain text format with a binary header consisting of four bytes (denoting version) and up to 256 colors. An .aco file typically contains one or more colors in addition to color settings and the hexadecimal value associated with each color. It also supports names for each palette (separated by a tab), with the only limitation being that the total length of all palette names must not be greater than 127 characters.
The ACO file contains hexadecimal values for CMYK, RGB, HSB, Pantone, Grayscale and Lab colors making it compatible with many different software applications. Additionally, it can store gradients, tints or multiple color combinations. Other related file extensions include .ase, .gpl, aco2, and .icc.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ACO) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ACO extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ACO file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ACO extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ACO extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ACO file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ACO file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ACO file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ACO file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ACO file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
