The ACF file extension is associated with Steam, Valve Corporation's digital game delivery platform. It stands for Steam Application Cache File since the ACF file contains information on the installed applications on Steam. Upon installation, Steam will create an ACF file in which all information concerning the game is stored. This includes data such as the game title, the game version, installation path, and checksum.
ACF files are important in that they are used to track all of a user's downloadable content (DLC) within Steam. Without an ACF file any game or DLC downloaded through Steam would not be recognized. One of the main advantages of .ACF files is their ability to detect any updates to the program since the ACF files are regularly updated with new additions and changes by the Valve Corporation.
