The AC$ file extension is used by AutoCAD, a computer-aided design application owned by Autodesk. AutoCAD is used for two- and three-dimensional design and drafting, and the AC$ files are used when a drawing needs to be saved temporarily. When an AutoCAD drawing is opened, a temporary AC$ file is also created which contains a “snapshot” of the drawing. Even if the original drawing is not saved, the AC$ file saves the up to date state of the drawing so that in case of a system failure, the most recent version of the drawing can still be recovered.
Technical Details
The AC$ file extension is a generic Windows temporary file. It can contain both binary and plain text data that is used to store only temporarily. In AutoCAD, they are mainly used as backups or for virtual memory. They are usually found in the same directory as the original drawings and contain the same name plus an additional character such as “#”, “$” or “%”. Other similar file extensions used by AutoCAD are .DWG, .DWF, .DXF and .BMP.
Getting Rid of Temp Files
When AutoCAD drawings are closed, their associated temp files will usually be deleted automatically. However, in certain cases, such as when an AutoCAD session crashes or there is an issue opening a drawing, these files may remain on the hard drive. It is possible to manually delete these files if needed, but they should not be deleted while AutoCAD is running as this may lead to lost work.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .AC$) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .AC$ extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .AC$ file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .AC$ extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .AC$ extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .AC$ file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .AC$ file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .AC$ file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .AC$ file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .AC$ file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
