The 3DM ( 3DM) file extension is associated with Rhinoceros 3D, a comprehensive software program used for creating 3D models and calculations. It offers users the ability to physically create three-dimensional models in a few different ways, including through surfaces, curves, solids and meshes, as well as by using commands. 3DM files are generated when a user saves their project in Rhinoceros 3D. As 3DM files are the native file format of Rhinoceros 3D, these files are highly efficient for complex figures and can be further appended with nondestructive operations, like changing the functionality and visibility of an object without permanently altering it.
Technical Details
These files are identified as binary files and can be exported to various graphic formats such as JPG, BMP, PNG, etc., that can be viewed in any other program that supports those specific formats. Additionally, users can export a 3DM file into other vector data formats, such as Lightweight DWG, DXF, 3DS, or a standalone database ( OBJ) format. Amongst these common formats, the DWG format being a primary standard for transferring CAD data between different programs is most commonly used by users.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .3DM) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .3DM extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .3DM file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .3DM extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .3DM extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .3DM file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .3DM file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .3DM file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .3DM file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .3DM file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
